We first meet Tia Dalma in Dead Man's Chest, and we do not learn much about her in the course of the movie, but she foreshadows many important plot twists, such as the crab-shaped locket on her table. She appears to be a voodoo witch, with many knick-knacks lying around her hut and an appearance to match. She tells Jack and co about Davy Jones, after Jack offered her Jack the monkey (who ran off to a pair of boots lying on a bed), seeming to know a bit much. She says that Davy Jones carved his heart out because he could not stand the pain of heartache, after falling in love with the woman and the sea. "Same story, different version," as Tia says.

At the end of the movie, after the Kraken pulls Jack to Davy Jones' locker, the distraught crew of the Black Pearl heads back to Tia Dalma's hut. "Would you brave the weird and haunted shores at World's End?" she asks them, wondering if they would bring back Jack. Everyone agrees, and Barbossa - magically alive - comes down the stairs, asking what has happened to his ship.

We find out in At World's End that she was really Calypso, a heathen goddess of the sea, bound in human form by the first Brethren Court. The Court was told how to bind her by none other than her previous lover - Davy Jones.
